What Are You Reading Wednesday?

What Are You Reading Wednesday was created by RhiannaMarissa, and Kendall. The idea is to create a space for book lovers to share, discuss, and recommend the books they are currently reading and loving. All you have to do is answer the questions about your current read and then head over to one of the host’s sites to link up your post! Have fun and don’t forget to check out everyone’s posts as well!

Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg and Chancellorsville—derailing the War Between the States and changing America forever. In this new nation, safety for all depends on the work of a few, and laws like the Native and Negro Reeducation Act require certain children attend combat schools to learn to put down the dead. But there are also opportunities—and Jane is studying to become an Attendant, trained in both weaponry and etiquette to protect the well-to-do. It’s a chance for a better life for Negro girls like Jane. After all, not even being the daughter of a wealthy white Southern woman could save her from society’s expectations.

But that’s not a life Jane wants. Almost finished with her education at Miss Preston’s School of Combat in Baltimore, Jane is set on returning to her Kentucky home and doesn’t pay much mind to the politics of the eastern cities, with their talk of returning America to the glory of its days before the dead rose. But when families around Baltimore County begin to go missing, Jane is caught in the middle of a conspiracy, one that finds her in a desperate fight for her life against some powerful enemies. And the restless dead, it would seem, are the least of her problems.

1. Why did you decide to pick up this book–cover or content?

Can I say both? I mean just look at that cover! I love it. And for content, how could I pass up a book about zombies? I simply couldn’t! I love zombie books and I haven’t read enough of them.

2. Who is your favorite character so far, and why?

I’m not very far in so I don’t know all that many characters, but so far my favorite character is Jane. I love how she is kind of a rebel and doesn’t mind getting into trouble.

3. Will you finish this one?

Yes, I do believe so. I’m really enjoying what I have read of it so far.

4. This book reminds me of…

Anything with zombies. I mean the first thing to come to mind for me is The Walking Dead, which I love by the way. (No spoilers for the show though, I’m not caught up to the current season!)

5. What type of read is this one? (Slow but interesting, cannot put it down…)

I really cannot say at this point. I just haven’t read enough of the book to determine that yet. So far it has me intrigued.

Well, that completes this week’s What Are You Reading Wednesday post! It was a lot of fun! Are you planning on participating next week? What is your current read? Let me know down in the comments! ‘Til next time!

  2. I’m currently reading Vignettes: a collection of erotic novellas (a genre I have never read before) and not too sure how I feel about it just yet. It’s ok so far but the storyline is lacking a bit and is more focused on well…erotic stuff 😛 Oh the things we read as reviewers 😉

    1. There’s definitely a lot more going on than just zombies. The book is actually based off of actual historical occurrences. In the 1800s whites removed Native American children from their homes and sent them to these industrial schools in order to “civilize” them. It’s such an interesting concept. I’ll definitely be going more into it in my review.
